THE BRITISH KING
Rain is few and far between.
But the thunder rolls in with the smell of burned spinifex and pindan,
eroded shadows.
Longer edges,
disjointed,
hazy horizon
blurred memories.
Recollections of a summer storm
belting out sounds that made me want to clamber back into the diggings.
Where carbide grit and acetylene fumes illuminated the dingy hole
that i called my office.
Dreaming,
scratching,
scarifying.
Digging holes in remote landscapes,
echoes of crow craws
black
long silences of mind-numbing solitude.
The kiss of my shovel against her roughs,
the gravelly sound as the dirt hits the kibble.
Grit filled nails, dirty oafish fingers,
fumbling strength.
Muted light and dancing shadows,
tantalising recollections of illicit touch,
her musty womanly scent,
her love,
her pleasure.
I began to dream of that one true love.
a deep desire,
to be within her earthy confines …
I called it love,
she called it service.
2008.

7. TREES THAT SPEAK
“When I say every 'state' or 'thought' is part of a personal consciousness, 'personal consciousness' is one of the terms in question. Its meaning we know so long as no one asks us to define it, but to give an accurate account of it is the most difficult of philosophic tasks.” William James - The Stream of Consciousness 1892
Crayon and wash on paper. 280 x 380 mm.
There are 10 volumes each containing 10 drawings. These drawings began as an exploration of something as simple as motif, but gradually process became dominant as the mark making became more carbonous and energetic. The trees that speak gradually become frustrated as time passes, process, culture and language becomes increasingly complex and more difficult. People in Australia associate working in Bali sekaligus holiday. Nothing is further from the truth.
The trees speak of the joy, the humour and the difference.
